Keep the Flame Burning Bright (and Safely!): Your Guide to Candle Care

Candle Corner
Candle Safety

There's something undeniably cosy and comforting about a lit candle. The gentle flicker, the soothing scent - it can transform a room and lift your spirits. But like any good thing, candles require a little care and attention to ensure you enjoy them safely and make the most of their fragrant glow.

So, before you reach for that match, let's dive into some essential candle care and safety tips that will help you keep the flame burning bright (and responsibly!).

Safety First, Always

This can't be stressed enough. While candles create a beautiful ambience, they are still an open flame and require mindful handling.

  • Never Leave Unattended

This is the golden rule. Always extinguish a candle before leaving a room or going to sleep.

  • Keep Away From Flammables

Curtains, bedding, paper, and clothing should be kept at a safe distance (at least one foot or 30 cm) from a burning candle.

  • Keep Out of Reach of Children & Pets

Their curiosity can lead to accidents. Place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces where they can't be easily knocked over.

  • Avoid Hot Surfaces

Do not burn candles on or near anything that can get hot, such as televisions, electronics, or in direct sunlight.

  • Use a Proper Holder

Ensure it's stable, heat-resistant, and designed for the size and shape of your candle.

  • Ensure Good Ventilation

Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, but avoid draughts, as they can cause the flame to flicker excessively, smoke, or extinguish prematurely.

  • Keep the Wax Pool Clean

Debris like matches or wick trimmings can become a fire hazard. Extinguish the flame, let the wax cool, and then remove them.

  • Never Move a Burning Candle

Wait until it's completely extinguished and the wax has solidified.

  • Be Prepared for Emergencies

Keep a fire extinguisher or a bowl of water nearby in case of an accident.

Caring for Your Candle for a Longer, Better Burn

Proper care not only ensures safety but also helps your candle last longer and burn more evenly.

  • Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before lighting, trim the wick to about ¼ inch (5mm). This prevents a large, smoky flame and helps the candle burn cleaner and for longer.

  • Allow for a Full Melt Pool

On the first burn, let the candle burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt. This usually takes 1-2 hours and creates a "memory ring", which prevents the candle from tunnelling (where the centre burns down, leaving wax on the sides).

  • Do Not Burn for Excessive Periods

The ideal burn time is usually around 3-4 hours. Burning for longer can cause the container to overheat and the flame to become large and unstable.

  • Centre the Wick if it Drifts

While the wax is still molten, use a tool to gently nudge a wandering wick back to the centre. Be extremely careful.

  • Extinguish the Flame Correctly

The best method is to use a candle snuffer. Blowing it out can cause hot wax to splatter and create more smoke. A wick dipper is also an excellent, smoke-free option.

  • Store Your Candles Properly

Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This helps to preserve the fragrance and prevent the wax from melting or discolouring.

  • Know When to Say Goodbye

When only about ½ an inch (1.5 cm) of wax remains, it's time to retire your candle. Burning it further can cause the container to overheat and potentially crack.

Enjoy the Glow Responsibly

By following these simple candle care and safety tips, you can fully enjoy the warm ambience and delightful fragrances of your favourite candles without compromising on safety. So go ahead, light that wick, relax, and let the comforting glow fill your space - responsibly, of course!
